Ethics 101
Definition of Ethics: Moral principles that govern a person's or group's behavior.
Legal vs. Ethical: There is a notable difference between being legal and being ethical. Being ethical in a negotiation process often holds parties to a higher bar than just being legal. For example, it may be legal to market horror movies during children’s television shows, but most would consider it unethical.
Ethics in Negotiation: Negotiating ethically allows for an integrative negotiation approach, because both parties are being honest and fair in the negotiation process. It is important to note that even though ethics requires honesty it does NOT mean that the parties have to give in at every point or disclose their weakest points, it just means that the parties have integrity through the process.
